Twelve million SEK in grants to Nanosphere researcher Åsa Boholm

News: Nov 10, 2014

Nanosphere-affiliated researcher Åsa Boholm, professor of social anthropology, has been granted a total of twelve million SEK in research grants from Formas and the Swedish Research Council for her research.

In the project "Future Nanotechnology: An investigation of risk, promise and hope," for which Åsa Boholm possesses six million SEK in research grants from the Swedish Research Council, the goal is to examine nanotechnology as an umbrella term for emerging technology science innovations. The project investigates including how research initiatives in nanotechnology communicate and describe future applications of nanotechnology knowledge, both in the form of promises and possibilities and in terms of risks and threats.

- The overall objective is to promote understanding of the social, organizational and cultural dynamics that affect technology, science and innovation in society.

In the project "Risk communication by Swedish government agencies: a comparative approach", for which she possesses six million SEK by Formas, Åsa Boholm will investigate how seven Swedish authorities who all have sustainable development within its area of responsibility, are communicating about risk.

Risk communication is an area of research that explores questions about how information about risk and uncertainty are produced, communicated and understood. This can include the information about the threats that concern, for example human life and health, environmental risks or threats to wildlife and plants. Risk communication is in that way a key part of planning for a sustainable society.

- The knowledge that the study provides can improve communication so that the information from the authorities is relevant, balanced, reliable and comprehensible to those whom it is addressed, says Åsa Boholm.

The research projects will run for a total of four years.
