Social and sociotechnical studies of innovation and risk of nanotechnology

The issue of who 'owns the problem' concerning risk and innovation in nanotechnology is an ongoing and unresolved debate.

Nanotechnology lack industrialization and societal organization, and risk and innovation may become part of the concerns that research leaders have to deal with. A study by Hans Fogelberg and Mats Lundqvist of the views of nanotechnology research leaders with respect to the integration of innovation aspects with their academic research agenda indicates that researchers may be prepared to integrate academic and initial developmental roles, if they are given the resources and the control of these resources. This possibility is largely blocked by a Swedish innovation policy framed as top-down system.
